Our NEW ZEALAND holiday
Well Jon and I have just returned from 3 weeks in awesome New Zealand, touring in a campervan. Now this alone is an adventure. First you have to learn all about what is IN the van and how to work everything. Ours was pretty basic but needed a tool to undo the gas fitting.OUr ist destination, Christchurch had temps of 26oC , hot for there so we made the bed without blankets...big mistake as next night we needed body warmth to keep warm (not a bad thing) Luckily the doona was easily located for the rest of the trip. We did have some very wet and windy days -3out of 21!! NZ is such a diverse place. The Canterbury plains were dry and barren -due to a dry summer, the rest of the continent had a mix of scenery ,including alpine foprests, beaches with many craggy outcrops and of course it is very mountainous, which could take you to many other countries. We both enjoy walking so approx. 3 hrs a day we would 'tramp' around the countryside. Jon is an adventurous driver so many a back road was discovered, particularly when we went searching for the famous scones he had heard about from a mate (place was shut). We had a couple of very rough drives-one to Mt Aspiring National park and the Rob Roy glacier--the pick of our walks. Another around the coast from Picton to Blenheim-what was approx 45kms took us 2 hrs, but so worth it. We stayed in some awesome van parks ; our favourite were Fox Glacier and te Anau holiday parks. WE also tried out the DOC sites -basic but good . Naturally we made 'friends' with the Keas that attacked our roof at Mt Cook. We found the prices for some activities expensive so wonder how some people can afford to do these--we avoided these in favour of walking and 1 plane trip over lake Te Anau and Doubtful Sound and a cruise on Milford Sound all stunning. Jon loves planes so trips to these museums a must, as was Puzzle world and the toy and transport museum at Wanaka--fabulous and inexpensive. We found we saved on food, by using the van, as one can pull up anywhere and have a cuppa and lunch/ dinner while enjoying spectacular scenery. As it was daylight until 2100 we enjoyed sitting outside sipping our wine and indulging in biscuits and dip. Overall a fabulous, restful trip. Our next trip .... Australia somewhere in the Longezy. While we were away our internet business kept ticking away in the background. check out www.oneyearplan.net/ezfunds Lyn |
